Target To Offer Four Hours Of Pay, Free Lyft Ride, For Workers To Get Vaccinated



TOPLINE Target will offer pay incentives to hourly employees to receive a Covid vaccine, joining several other companies with similar programs, but will not require vaccination as a term of employment.

Target has more than 350,000 part-time and full-time workers who will be eligible for these perks.

However, Target noted that getting vaccinated will not be a requirement to come to work.

Target (which raised its minimum hourly wage to $15 last summer and offered a one-time $200 bonus in recognition of employees who worked during the pandemic) joins various other companies that are offering extra pay and incentives in exchange for receiving vaccinations, a crucial element for retail store and grocery chain workers who deal face-to-face with customers. German-based supermarket chain Aldi already offered four hours of pay for workers to get two vaccine doses, as have U.S.-based retailers McDonald’s, Dollar General and Trader Joe’s. Kroger said it will make a one-time payment of $100 to vaccinated employees. As “essential” services, grocery and big-box retailers remained open during the pandemic, as most restaurants and shopping malls shut down, placing these workers at risk of contracting the virus. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents frontline essential workers, including grocery employees, said on Tuesday that 137 grocery workers in the U.S. have died from Covid while more than 30,100 have been infected or exposed. The union also said that in meatpacking plants it represents, 132 workers have died from the virus and 21,900 have been infected.

While most companies are not requiring vaccinations as a requirement to come to work, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said he might make vaccinations mandatory for his 60,000 employees and suggests other companies do likewise. But a survey released in December by Pew Research found that some 39% of U.S. workers said they would probably get a vaccine. A Gallup poll released Wednesday indicated that some two-thirds of Americans are dissatisfied with the overall vaccination rollout program. Black Americans are especially fearful and distrustful of vaccination schemes, said the University of Miami. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that more than 32.8 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine thus far
