Quick post to alert you to a fantastic article by Bryon Powell of iRunFar. Bryon attended the Outdoor Retailer Show and wrote up his thoughts (with photos!) on a wide range of trail shoes set to be released in the coming months (and a few road shoes – including the New Balance Minimus Hi-Rez).In addition to highlighting a bunch of new models (including some very cool shoes from Pearl Izumi – see PI Trail N1 photo above by Bryon Powell)Nike Air Zoom Spiridon Femme, Bryon also touches on some updates to a few shoes that I have worn in the past six months. Most significant among these are a new, grippier outsole Nike Air Max Axis Heren on the Brooks Pure Grit (hopefully will reduce wet-ground slippage), and a 1mm reduction in lateral sole thickness on the New Balance MT110.I get asked frequently about the New Balance MT110, and yes, I have run in the shoe a number of times. However, I definitely feel a rather distinct thickening of the lateral sole in my pair, and it actually causes my feet to slant inward just standing in them on hard ground. After developing a mild case of posterior tibial tendonitis after a 10 mile trail run in the MT110’s, I shelved them and have not run in them since. Hopefully this will fix a big problem in what is an otherwise nice shoe.Anyway, I highly recommend checking out Bryon’s trail shoe roundup – lots of great stuff coming for the trail crowd!Like many people, I’ve spent the last two weeks soaking up as much of the Olympic coverage as I can. As someone who rarely watches television (we dropped cable several years ago and have not looked back!), the Olympic experience has reacquainted me with the “commercial break.” I could live without the vast majority of commercials, though as a blogger I now understand the necessity of advertising to help pay the bills, and I’ve actually enjoyed some of the ads featuring Olympic athletes.Came across a tweet this morning from my buddy Tuck of the Yelling Stop blog.Nike Air Max 270 Femme His link was to a nice video from Dr. Daniel Lieberman discussing 5 DOs and DON’Ts of running form. I agree with almost all of them, particularly points 1 and 5. As far as footstrike goes, I tend to view a Adidas Arkyn Womenslittle bit to either side of the midfoot to be fine as long as there is limited to no overstride (too much focus on foot strike can be problematic and often causes Adidas Superstar Womens people to consciously exaggerate form in a potentially negative way). I know from your footstrike/shoe test blogs you sometimes run on a treadmill indoors. I live in Washington State. Although it is beautiful this time of year and I can run outside, I am looking at getting a treadmill for the fall/winter/wet spring months. With my current work schedule, kid’s soccer practice, etc., etc., it’s difficult to get into the gym so I’m going to get a treadmill for my home and Adidas Superstar Mujer continue to run when the cold and rain arrives. Any advice on which brand and model? What do you have? Also, any advice on maintaining good running form on a treadmill versus outdoors on the road and trail? Any downside to running on a treadmill for fitness? |
