| This season is going to come down to one four-game stretch for the Cowboys This past week has been one of reflection (and in some cases decisive action) for the Cowboys as they are on their bye. They’re 3-4 and amazingly almost half of the season is over.It kind of feels like a reset button was hit for the Cowboys with the trade for Amari Cooper. There’s a general sense of “I don’t know what’s going to happen over the second half of this season, but it sure does seem exciting” surrounding Cowboys fans everywhere. Earlier this week FanPulse results told us that less than 30% of Cowboys fans think playoffs are a possibility, but obviously anyone rooting for the silver and blue hopes there is indeed January football for Dallas. Alternating wins and losses is hardly going to cut it for the Cowboys if they want to get in the playoffs, but the NFC East has been average overall and they’re absolutely in the thick of things as we enter November.NFC East standings through Week 7:Washington Redskins, 4-2Philadelphia Eagles, 3-4Dallas Cowboys, 3-4New York Giants, 1-6Washington and New York square off this week and obviously we’re rooting for a Redskins loss. Philadelphia will “visit” the Jaguars in London and with Jacksonville looking flat as of late that’s likely an Eagles win, but to be fair they did just blow a 17-point lead, all in the fourth quarter. Things will get wild, unpredictable wins and losses will happen, and odds are good that the Cowboys will have more than their fair share of an opportunity to win the division.The Tennessee Titans game is the last game before the gauntlet beginsWhen the Cowboys do emerge from their bye they’ll play host to the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. It’ll be Jason Witten’s return to Dallas and by the most insane coincidence ever it will happen on the one-year anniversary of Tony Romo’s first return when the Cowboys hosted the Kansas City Chiefs last season. November 5th is now a Cowboys holiday apparently.Nobody is in the business of looking past the Titans, but it feels fair to say that the Cowboys should win Dallas Cowboys Hoodie , does it not? (I know, I know, you refuse to assume the Cowboys should win a game until they show you something, blah blah, you get the point). As noted it’ll be Jason Witten’s homecoming plus Amari Cooper’s debut, under the bright lights of MNF, that’s a lot of positive momentum going the Cowboys way.Assuming the Cowboys do indeed beat the Titans and that the Eagles are victorious over the Jags then both teams will be 4-4 when they play each other in Week 10. It’s been a long time.Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY SportsDallas and Philly have played each other in Week 17 in each of the last two seasons and each of them, respectively, had already locked up the NFC’s top seed and rested all of their starters. We’re going to get to see Dak and Zeke take on the Philly crowd that has something on the line which is always very interesting. This would make the Week 10 game bigger on its own, but if the Cowboys and Eagles are both 4-4 this game will leave the winner with legitimate life on the season and the loser needing significant help. It will be the biggest game for the Cowboys in quite some time.The Eagles are the reigning Super Bowl Champions and while that deserves a level of respect, it might not be ridiculous to suggest that the Redskins are the more likely team to win the division. Washington still gets to play teams like Tennessee (who we’re suggesting Dallas will beat), Tampa Bay (Dallas does as well), and the Giants twice. The Redskins should at least get to eight wins while the Eagles still have to play both the Saints and Rams (apologies, an earlier typo had the Vikings here).The Philly game kicks off the four-game gauntlet that will define the Cowboys seasonDallas has yet to win on the road this season in four tries and their next two traveling games might be their hardest. Just one week after they visit Philly the Cowboys will be charged with exorcising the demons of a November ago when they play a road game against the Atlanta Falcons.The Falcons have struggled this season Emmitt Smith Color Rush Jersey , but inside of their stadium (coincidentally the home of Super Bowl LIII where we all would love to end up) they’re a different team. Atlanta has scored at least 30 points in four of their five home games (yes they’ve already played that many) meanwhile Dallas has yet to break 17 on the road. This would put them at 4-6 on a short week readying to host the Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving. Typically 10 wins is about or around enough to win your division and if this ended up being the case the Cowboys would have to win out in order to have a chance.You can almost talk yourself into the Cowboys beating the Redskins on Turkey Day because they should have arguably won when they visited our nation’s capital last week. Amari Cooper will hopefully present a difference of sorts, but even if you assume the Cowboys win that game things don’t get easier seven days later because the Cowboys host the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football.Cowboys four-game stretch after MNF vs. Titans:At Philadelphia EaglesAt Atlanta FalconsWashington Redskins (Thanksgiving)New Orleans Saints (Thursday Night Football)Following this brutal stretch the Cowboys have an opportunity to end the season strong. After hosting the Eagles, they visit the Indianapolis Colts (the Matt Eberflus revenge game!), host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (maybe Zeke will jump in a kettle again), and visit the Giants in the regular season finale. You can argue that the last three games should be wins and obviously so much of this hinges on what Amari Cooper does over this stretch, but anything can happen. The home game against the Eagles will be tough, but Dallas is a much better team at home than on the road.Dallas has to win at least half of this gauntlet or it’s going to be tough sleddingShould the Cowboys win at least two games of this particular stretch we’re discussing then you can argue that they’ll have solid chances while we’re all doing our Christmas shopping. If they drop three of them, possibly even all four, that should be the season right there. It’s akin to last season how the Cowboys hosted Philly, traveled to Atlanta, and hosted the Chargers on Thanksgiving... three losses that ultimately ended their season in many respects.This four-game stretch includes three playoff teams from last season, not to mention the one that won it all, and the current NFC East leader in the Redskins. It’s a very tough stretch and the Cowboys are going to have to pull something incredible off if they want a chance for a 17th game on the season. He only has one year of experience as a coach, period. It is putting a lot of pressure on him and his head coach, Jason Garrett, who is in a contract year. Most of the focus on what we may or may not expect from Moore has been on the passing game and Dak Prescott. Even the excellent Bob Sturm, in his look at what went wrong in the red zone in 2018 at The Athletic, spent a lot more time talking about Dak Prescott and the passing game than the running attack.But that ignores half of the job for Moore. He isn’t just being called on to get more out of his quarterback. He also has to make better use of arguably the best player on the team, Ezekiel Elliott. There has been some discussion of how Moore needs to get away from letting the defenses stack the box by being far less predictable with his personnel packages and formations, but it needs to be given some more consideration.Whether analytics says it is smart or not, the Cowboys are almost certainly still going to rely heavily on the run game. That may involve having a balance of play selection on first down, or using more options or audibles to better exploit what the defense is showing. They will certainly still feed Zeke when they have a lead, especially late in the game when controlling the clock works greatly to their advantage. That is an aspect of the game where Moore’s hoped-for innovation and creativity can pay dividends. Last season, Dallas Troy Aikman Color Rush Jersey , or more specifically Scott Linehan, kept lining up in obvious run formations and expecting to beat the opponent at the point of attack. That worked brilliantly in 2016, when the Cowboys had a truly elite offensive line. But in 2017 and especially 2018, that did not pay off well at all, as injury and illness led to changes in the starters and backups having to fill in up front. The failure to adjust and adapt to overcome those problems was a key part in the decision to replace Linehan and give Moore the keys to the offense. The hope is that Moore will use motion and formations to spread the defense out and depopulate the box. That gives the offensive linemen a better chance to open up the holes for Elliott. It might be tempting to go back to the old way of doing things with the expected return of Travis Frederick and the anticipated improvement of Connor Williams (or the possibility of Connor McGovern winning the starting LG job), but that would not be wise. Motion and formations are supposed to be tools Moore can use more effectively than his predecessor. They should not be left in the toolbox. Additionally, Elliott is simply superb when he can get the ball in space. Linehan used him as a receiver, but mostly on screens and as a safety valve. Moore could do so much more with plays that get Elliott open past the line of scrimmage and moving forward, where he can use his impressive combination of power and speed to get yards after the catch. That’s not to say the screen should be thrown out of the playbook, because we have seen what Elliott can do when things are set up properly. But more needs to be added to the mix with him. He is a dominant player when he is not outnumbered at the line of scrimmage. It just makes sense to have more plays where he is only trying to get past one defender, especially if it is a defensive back when he has a size advantage. And don’t forget that hurdling skill. He is a big back, listed at 225, and this year he looks to be in very good shape. A lot of corners and safeties are not going to be eager to go one-on-one with him when he has is headed downhill in their direction.The team has a new wrinkle to add this year in Tony Pollard, and that gives them some intriguing possibilities that can also help Elliott. Pollard is not just a change of pace back Tony Pollard Jersey , like the team tried to use Tavon Austin last season. Pollard is also a legitimate between the tackles runner. One thing Moore has hopefully (and probably) considered is putting both Elliott and Pollard in the backfield to start the play, and then motioning either out to be a receiver. The play can then be either a pass or a run, based on how the defense reacts to the shift. And sometimes, one can lead block, perhaps on a quick count. It is one more way to inject that needed unpredictability. While we are playing OC, how about an option run, with one of the backs out front and the other trailing Prescott who can keep or pitch the ball as the play develops.This is just scratching the surface of what Moore can do with the running game. Sturm put this out to show just how unconventional playcalling can throw the defense for a loop in trying to stop the run.That is a thing of beauty - except for the befuddled defense.A lot has been made of how Moore is key to Prescott’s continued development. But he has an important bit of help in new QB coach Jon Kitna, who is in position to do so much to help Prescott with his footwork and reads. Elliott stands to benefit just as much from Moore’s direct contributions as Prescott. Perhaps even more. (It’s hard not to sound like I’m making a pun there.) There are understandable voices of caution concerning an inexperienced OC. But one thing everyone seems to agree on is that Kellen Moore has an element of brilliance in his concept for the game. And now he has a roster that has talent and experience, although the depth at wide receiver still has to prove itself. There is also the question of just what Jason Witten still brings to the table, and how he will be used. But there are no questions about Elliott’s abilities, and the offensive line picture offers a lot of hope. Moore can do a lot to improve the effectiveness of the passing game, but he can also do so much to restore the dominance of the Dallas ground attack. |
